Choosing the right elevator display

A practical guide to screen size and the right model for your content

For architects, chief engineers, elevator sales engineers and service engineers

A TFT colour display can give an elevator cabin a fresh look while making the screen useful for more than floor numbers and direction arrows. The right choice starts with two questions: what size suits the cabin, and what content does the end user want to show? Answering these first helps you choose a model that serves the purpose and fits the budget.

Key takeaways

Start with the purpose Decide whether you need images, video or a networked multimedia display before selecting the model.

Size for the cabin Choose the screen according to cabin size, viewing position and available mounting space.

Buy the features you will use Match the display’s capabilities to your content and how often it needs to change.

What a TFT colour display adds

Traditional seven-segment and dot-matrix indicators are familiar ways to show floor information, typically in a fixed format with limited colour options. A programmable TFT colour display gives greater flexibility in screen size, colour and layout.

Depending on the model, the screen can combine elevator information with a builder’s or elevator manufacturer’s logo, images, notices or video. It can become a useful communication space during the ride.

Choose the right screen size

The display range described here spans 4 to 18 inches, with availability depending on the model. Screen size is measured diagonally; it is not the display’s width or height.

Select the size with the cabin and installation location in mind. Check the overall unit dimensions and mounting requirements in the datasheet, and consider how comfortably passengers can read the screen from their normal standing position.

Match the model to your content

Decide what you want to run alongside the elevator information. A screen for a set of images has different requirements from one intended for video or centrally managed multimedia.
Model Content and capability Best suited to
Quanta Image display Logos, notices and a sequence of still images.
Blaze Video with audio, or images; without server connectivity Video and image content where central server management is not required.
Elevista Multimedia with elevator interface and server connectivity Infotainment and advertising requiring central content management.

Check the selected model’s datasheet for supported functions, available sizes and interface requirements.

Plan how the content will be updated

Think beyond what the screen can play. Who will prepare the content, how often will it change, and will one person need to manage several displays? For occasional image updates, Quanta may be sufficient. Choose Blaze when video and audio are needed without server connectivity. Consider Elevista when central content management is part of the requirement.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need multimedia capability just to show images? Not necessarily. If a sequence of images meets the purpose, assess Quanta before paying for additional features.

Is a larger display always better? No. The screen should suit the cabin, mounting space and viewing position. Check the unit dimensions as well as the diagonal screen size.

What should I check with the elevator team? Confirm the mounting arrangement, power supply and compatibility with the elevator’s floor and direction signals. Also confirm how content will be loaded and updated.
